Vines of brown and copper

skin of golden orange

sponge-like flesh with seeds

for miles and miles they grow

all in a marmalade glow.

Falling autumn leaves

pouring rain from the trees

landing on the field covering all the pumpkins

like a blanket of coloured napkins.

Pumpkins strong in spirit

The brisk burial of October

lays to rest the smaller ones

peacefully into the ground.
